Advocating for Education Funding
On behalf of TDSB parents & caregivers, PIAC submitted a letter to the Ministry of Education asking them to consult with Ontario PICs (Parent Involvement Committees) about the current education funding formula. PIAC requested immediate action that includes:
- The urgent public dissemination of the funding formula calculation used to calculate the upcoming 2025-2026 school year funding packages to school boards: In accordance with the 2017 Ontario Auditor General’s report, the Ministry of Education has an obligation to provide a transparent and detailed funding formula and extend to parents the opportunity for review and consultation.
- An in-person consultation meeting of the Ministry with representatives from all Ontario PICs: Although our school board is hard hit by underfunding, we recognize that school underfunding is a widespread problem affecting many boards and hundreds of thousands of children. We are not asking for special treatment for the TDSB; only that the province meet its obligations under law. This meeting should take place no later than May 12th, 2025 and should allow the PICs to make meaningful recommendations to the Ministry, which will inform revisions to the funding calculations.
PIAC also recommended to the TDSB Board of Trustees to hold a NO CUTS position on their upcoming Budget deliberations.
