PIAC submission to Ontario Budget Consultation

January 13, 2025

On behalf of TDSB parents & caregivers, PIAC submitted feedback to the Ontario Budget Consultation on prioritizing education funding in their 2025-26 provincial budget. In particular, PIAC supports the TDSB Board of Trustees’ budget response and stresses the need for Mental Health supports to increase Professional Support Services staff to support students.

Transparency of Funds – PIAC motion, June 2024 (Recommendation)

PIAC passed a motion recommending that the Board improve transparency and reporting around 5 specific areas involving non-board fundraised money and school budgets:

  1. The Director provide a report on School Generated Funds (non-board funds) of schools which includes:
    1. non-board funds raised by School Councils; and
    2. non-board funds raised by the schools (not including funds raised by School Councils)
  2. PIAC be provided with a definition and the reporting criteria of School Generated Funds (non-board) that specifies:
    1. School Councils’ fundraising (non-board funds), and 
    2. schools’ fundraising (non-board funds)
  3. Principals regularly report to their School Councils on the school’s fundraising of non-board funds.
  4. Principals regularly report to their School Councils on the school’s budget, including, but not limited to, Model School funding and school Nutrition Program funding.
  5. That each fall information and training regarding the reporting of school budgets, including all fundraising of non-board funds be provided to:
    1. Principals,
    2. Office Administrators, and
    3. School Councils.

The motion was accepted by trustees at PSSC (Program & School Services committee) and referred to staff.  Senior staff responded to PIAC at the October general meeting.  See their point by point response slides.
