Ministry of Education Updates:

  • Cellphone usage:
    • Starting in September 2024, a cell phone ban will be in place in Ontario schools. In elementary school, phones will have to be off and out of sight throughout the school day. In high school, phones must be off and out of sight during class time. Phones can still be used for teaching, but it is up to individual teachers to decide. Breaking rules for cell phone use is now included in Ontario’s school code of conduct, and report cards must now include comments on students’ distraction levels.  
  • Financial literacy and life skills: 
    • The Ontario government will introduce new high school graduation requirements in 2025, including a requirement to score 70% or higher on a new financial literacy component of grade 10 math. The province will also introduce new life skills curriculum for secondary school. Consultations with parents and experts will begin this fall on what practical life skills students should learn in school.
  • The Ontario Curriculum Review and Revision Guide:
    • This guide provides an overview of the Ontario Ministry of Education’s process of reviewing and revising the curriculum in both English and French for Kindergarten to Grade 12. It is intended to provide greater transparency for parents, the public and the education sector regarding the ministry’s current process 
  • Starting in September 2025, Grades 7, 8 and 10 history classes will include mandatory learning with an emphasis on elevating Black history as Canadian history
  • Starting with students entering Grade 9 in September 2024, high school students will now be required to earn a Grade 9 or 10 Technological Education credit as part of their Ontario Secondary School Diploma
  • Two new experiential courses: Building the Entrepreneurial Mindset, Grade 9 and Launching and Leading a Business, Grade 10
  • Exploring Canadian Geography, Grade 9 will be de-streamed
  • Elementary social studies, history and geography: a guide for parents
    • Learn about Ontario’s revised social studies, history and geography curriculum for Grades 1 to 8. The curriculum will be implemented starting September 2023 
  • Mental Health Learning announced:  New curriculum proposed for 2023/24 school year
  • Gr. 7 & 8 mandatory resources for the Health curriculum
  • Gr. 10 mental health literacy included in Career Studies
  • Updates announced to the Computer Studies and Technological Education curricula:
    • Computer Studies curriculum, new Grade 10 course for September 2023
    • Technological Education curriculum, revised Grade 9 and 10 courses for September 2024
      • One Gr. 9 or 10 Technological Education credit required for graduation, in one of:

communications technology, computer technology, construction technology, green industries, hairstyling and esthetics, health care, hospitality and tourism, manufacturing technology, technological design or transportation technology
